Ai to Highball

Have you ever interpreted an image in a completely different way as a friend or family? What might influence such different interpretations?

What is Social Semiotics? Who Discovered it? Why is it Important?According to this week’s lecture, social semiotics is the study of signs and symbols as a part of social life. This idea was developed by Michael Halliday, who proposed the idea of social semiotics, which was then further built upon by Gunther Kress. Social semiotics is important as it transcends language barriers and represents ideas and concepts that would be difficult to get across using words only.

What are Some Rules Associated with the Methodology?
Vertical Positioning:
The top of an image represents ideals and aspirations while the bottom represents reality and known facts.
Horizontal Positioning:
The left side of an image represents known, given information while the right represents new, unknown information.
Composition:
The arrangement of visual elements changes how one might interpret an image. Symmetry and balance can represent harmony while framing can direct the audiences attention to the main focus of the image.
Color Interpretation:
The colors in an image can shape the mood of an image. Colors like green and blue are known to resemble calmness and nature, while vibrant colors like red and orange may convey intense energy and restlessness.

Analyzing Images Using Social the Rules of Social Semiotics:

Ai to Highball - LET ME KNOW
This image is an album cover for a song about intoxicating love and
wanting to stay intoxicated instead of facing reality. They compare love to the alcoholic beverage, a highball.
The album cover does a great job of getting the message across using color interpretation and composition. Using black and white (opposite colors), it depicts the contrast between intoxicating love versus reality. I interpreted swirl design in the back and the two people practically “blending” into each other as the distorted feeling that comes with intoxication and toxic love.

HOW? - BOYNEXTDOOR
For the second image I will be analyzing another album cover. This album cover does not have as much room for interpretation as the previous one however, I would like to reference the use of horizontal positioning here. On the left, representing known, given information, is a blue color which was actually the color of the album previously released right before this one. On the right, representing new, unknown information, is a shade of pink/magenta, which was the color of the album released after the previous album with the blue cover. This album cover represents the blending of previous albums, creating a new, signature sound for the group.
